When people think of health, physical conditioning is usually what comes to mind. To maintain it, most people know to start with diet and exercise. What about mental health though? Without healthy minds, it is more difficult to maintain proper physical health. For a better balance of mental and physical health, yoga and meditation offer solutions that can aid many people.
Mental health problems are rising by the year all over the world. A renowned psychologist once said that 99 percent of the world’s population is mentally afflicted in some way or the other. He also went on to say that the surest way to better ones mental health is through calm and quietude. He was talking about meditation.
Yoga is a great way to overcome mental health issues, and it is not very difficult to master. For those who have, they are able to go into a trance-like state and take full control of their thought processes to bring about feelings of calm and tranquility.
Some people travel all the way to India and pay huge sums of money to learn the art of yoga. While this is fine for those who want to learn yoga in this way, it is not necessary unless one wants to take it to a very high level. Simple classes and/or DVDs are all that are required.
Other people are under the mistaken impression that yoga is all about extreme flexibility and other very difficult feats, but nothing could be farther from the truth. While yoga does have its physical aspect, (this varies greatly with the type of yoga one practices), at its core it is a mental discipline involving meditation. This practice of meditation is one of the best ways of controlling the mind and thereby taking control of negative thought processes while achieving a greater level of mental health.
Like yoga, self-hypnosis is another way to bring about a better state of mental health. There are many products such as self hypnosis compact disks and downloadable files that can be played on iPods and other digital media. Just by listening to these recordings in quietude and concentrating on the techniques described in them, it is possible to master self-hypnosis processes that can effectively be used in improving one’s state of mental health.
Drug addiction, depression, alcoholism and other behavioral issues are all related to unstable mental health. While medication is required in some of these cases, it is not in most. Just developing a schedule to meditate in the morning or evenings through yoga or self-hypnosis techniques is enough to gain control and improve ones mental health and thereby setting out on the road to health and happiness.
